There is a marked difference in this year’s Google I/O developer’s conference that is held at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. This time the focus of the three days event is not Google products like Android and Chrome, but revolved around advancements in artificial intelligence.
Sundar Pichai, CEO said, “The company is using machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL) and computer vision in all its products—be it search, data centres, medical imaging, cloud, Google Assistant, the newly-launched Google Lens for Google Assistant, Google Home, or hands-free calling on Google Home.”
Here are some of the major announcements from day 1:
- As part of Google’s AI-first strategy, second-generation Tensor Processor Unit (TPU) – a cloud-computing hardware and software system will be deployed across its Google Compute. The chips are designed for machine learning models to improve the company’s products like Google Translate and Google Photos.
- Google launched its smart speaker called Home. It will be equipped with capabilities like identifying the caller’s voice, making hands-free phone calls, the option to link phone number through the device, and proactive assistance/notification to alter set agenda for the day. Unlike Amazon’s speaker Echo, calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for Home owners.
- The Google Assistant is getting a big visual upgrade through Google lens app. By just pointing their phone at a sign in a different language, the users can watch the translation. The point and see feature works to know the upcoming movie timing when pointed towards a theatre.
- Talking on the next major Android updates, Google makes it easier to copy-and-paste text on Android, there will be improvement in security and battery life. Android Go will be a version optimized to work on low-end phones with under 1GB of memory. An interesting option for users is they can preview videos and see exactly how much data will be consumed before streaming a full clip.
- Standalone VR headsets that doesn’t need to be connected to a computer or smartphone will be available starting later this year.
- By using Google Photos app, one will be able to order photo books based on the images in your phone’s gallery and share it with others.
Much more will be unveiled during the course of next two days.
